Noni’s Memorial Celebration


Naomi “Noni” Thompson Cardwell

Naomi Arlen Thompson was born April 17, 1913 in Richlands, NC. She was the oldest of three girls born to Bert and Laura Thompson of Ervintowne. Her sisters are the late Ruth Thompson Pitts and the late Juanita Thompson Brown, both of Richlands, NC. She was married to the late William Allison of Richmond, VA from 1933-39 and later to the late James “Lefty” Cardwell of Richlands, NC from 1943-94. Noni passed peacefully in her sleep on Friday, September 30, 2011 in Winston Salem, NC. Her family was bedside with her. Noni was well into her young 98th year.
Noni is survived by her beautiful daughter Patricia Allison Thompson of Chapel Hill, NC and her mildly handsome son James “JT” Cardwell and his wife Katherine of Winston Salem, NC. Noni is also survived by her nieces: Nita Brown Winn of Cary, NC and her husband Reamy; Marianne Pitts Cowan of Port St. Lucie, FL and her husband Dale and her nephews William B. Brown of Raleigh NC and his wife Sandra, David Henry Pitts of Mechanicsville, Md and his wife Debbie and Thompson Lee Brown of Richlands, NC and his wife Sheryl.

She was a lifelong member of the Richlands United Methodist Church until 2004 when taking residence with her son and daughter-in-law in Moravian Falls, NC. Naomi graduated from Richlands High School in 1930. In 1941, she was the founding clerk of the Onslow County Health Department and grew to become the executive secretary and local historian. In 1979 she retired after 38 passionate years of service. Noni will forever be remembered by her gracious personal walk with her Savior, devotion to family, and for her year-round gardening of wild and domesticated flowers, which she freely shared without charge. There will be a “Noni Memorial Celebration” on Sunday, October 16th at 2pm at the Richlands United Methodist Church. Following the celebrating, she will be interred beside her “Lefty”. If you wish to surround her with flowers, the church will begin to receive florals Saturday, October 15th, 2011.
