God’s Forked Tongue…
“Be wise as serpents…”

The Spirit speaks to me with a “forked” tongue. Always…
You see, it’s not the kind of forked tongue that we have grown up with from Western Cowboy and Indian movies. Or the kind that conjures lies for the sake of future advantage, doubled meaning in triplicate that only a member of the Bar could translate… or evidence of fangs in the waiting… deceitful, dangerous, deadly.
The Lord’s tongue is His voice and words and songs, His a cappella, His rhythm and melodies and metre, His accents of timbre and tenor and keys pitched, sustained by His unmerited favor. All these little things together, the precious things that make His tongue so recognizable… tuned in merciful harmony.
Most any parent can discern their child’s cry as playful or painful, scared or sacred. Children hear their mom or dad’s voice… their spirits, and they run to it’s pitch… like a tuning fork resonating.
The Lord’s tongue is our source, the place where a single point divides into two parts, for clarity of choice. Like a branching road, His voice defines direction even when we have no clear map before us. His voice… the compass of His heart. It points us to choose… to choose soundly, wisely… wisely as a serpent. Jesus allows us the trusted responsibility to walk as mature ones in His earth. That was His choice. Now His “forked” tongue refines and clarifies our decisions and the paths we will run. His tongue always brings silence to me… blessed silence unto us. In this silence we weigh the way before us. It is the love way we choose. It is costly and priceless… and sometimes lonely.
In the presence of his tongue we listen… we even suffer tribulation of past choices, judgments and our loitering. But we know that tribulation, (as anguished pressures) works and accomplishes and fashions patience… and patience (cheerful endurance) forms experience (a trust through trial)… and experience forms hope (an expecting confidence) and hope is never “shame faced”, confounded, dishonored or embarrassed because the love of God is “gushing” in our hearts. And there is Jesus… His forked tongue, resonating, bringing us to choose paths of affirmation, formation and communion.
And just as in Chess, His “fork”ed tongue can simultaneously attack two or more fronts… keeping enemies hedged, out flanked, and trapped as we run with our decisions down destiny’s drive. His forked tongue always speaks in the Spirit’s dialect, the language of His crazy love.
